The first data set actually began with 1980 data.  Since then the program has expanded to include a survey of bus crashes.

Far from being a morbid subject, the data helps understand how to enhance the safety of hazardous material shipments by the US Department of Energy.  In other cases, the research is conducted to perform impact (injury) biomechanics in the laboratory and conduct physical ergonomics research to help the auto industry improve vehicular design interiors. The Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS) is the place to go to see state-by-state records of truck or bus crashes, defined by severity criteria.   www.mcmiscatalog.fumcsa.dot.gov/beta/Catalogs&Documentation/ .

The Wedding Industry business, or the business of weddings is a large industry in terms of dollars, but tracking where that money is spent is more difficult for several reasons.  Many of the service providers (caterers, photographers, DJs, etc.) are provided by individuals and private firms, part-timers and consultants, who may not keep records broken out by wedding or non-wedding, or may do barters for "payment" of services.   Another reason is there are no easy defintions for staples within the industry. Consider "wedding dresses".  There are brides who wear a traditional long, white dress but there are others who buy a nice outfit and go to the judge's chambers, and other who plan "ethnic" weddings, wearing traditional decorative garb.  See www.loc.gov/rr/business/wedding/

The American Time Use Survey (ATUS) is for those of you who want to know the average amount of time per day that Americans worked, did household activities, cared for household children, participated in educational activities, and engaged in leisure and sports activities.  See the ATUS website -- www.bls.gov.tus/ or call 202.691.6339 or email questions to ATUSinfo@bls.gov.
