Turn to the Sporting Goods Manufacturing Association (SGMA) - www.sgma.com and find "Participation Reports".  These information reports include sports from A-Z: abdominal machine/device participation to yoga/tai chi.

With the new year comes resolutions to stay healthy and exercise. Another recent project involved clinical information and brought up the importance of evidence-based research and technology and the work conducted by The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the lead agency within the US Dept of Health and Human Service. The AHRQ is one of many government agencies that aim to improve the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care for Americans. In this age of reform, health consumer groups like the National Business Coalition on Health (www.nbch.org) are also entering the quality review and improvement process.

But it was the Institute of Medicine (IOM) (www.www2.nas.edu/iom)  that published their task force in 1991 that explained the rationale for computer-based records (CPR).  Since then, scores of health care information vendors have developed CPR collected from admissions, discharge and transfer (ADT) activities of patients.  There are scores of health care information systems set up to track and improve the quality of care.

The National Hospital Bill: Growth Trends and 2005 Update on the Most Expensive Conditions by Payer  was recently published by AHRQ.  If you love statistics (as we do), you'll enjoy this study: One-fifth of the nearly $875 billion spent on 39 million hospital stays was for treatment of five conditions: coronary artery disease, mother's pregnancy and delivery, newborn infants, acute myocardial infarction (AMI), and congestive heart failure (CHF).  You can find the entire report at www.hcup-us.ahrq.gov/.

.....and from the Trivia Desk:

The fastest growing search terms in the U.S. in 2007 according to Google do not appear on first look, to have anything to do with sports participation, healthy living or fitness.  Instead they appear to focus on entertainment, leisure, celebrities and relaxation.  Yet, the #1 term - "iphone" can be used while exercising, and the #3 term, "tmz" can be watched while exercising, as can the #5 term "youtube", and #10 "anna nicole smith".
